Just saw this link posted on Facebook. Probably the best summary of the Jimmie Rodgers Festival and "Hillbilly Days" I've ever encountered. Lots of good information and photographs. And, that photograph of Elvis we've been speculating about for years on this site is noted as being taken in front of the YMCA Building. Check this out.

As I stated in our earlier discussions about which building it was, the area is the middle of the picture is an open area in front of Dr. M. Leroy Rush, Sr.'s dental office inside the building.

His son, Marcus, was in our 1960 Class and in the Wildcat Band with me, Bob, Tony, and others.

I believe that the building had earlier been called the YMCA Building, but was then known as The Southern Building. A gymnasium was in the basement.

WTOK-TV was located in the building. George Shannon was the first newsman (later called anchorman), Bob Holland the first weatherman, and newspaperman Jerry Kerns a news contributor. Our own Bob Chatham (then an MHS student working there) also did some newscasts.

Bob Holland did weather reports in the basement/gymnasium. On each live newscast, he would erase the previous day's temperatures off of a blackboard, and write the new day's numbers there. Oh, how times have changed!

Eddie Holladay's WTOK Radio (later renamed WOKK Radio) was there then or not long thereafter.

MHS's Key Club had Key Club Radio Days there once a year to raise funds for the club. Club members sold and wrote ads and read them live on the air.

One year, everyone was standing around snickering as I read my ad for Tucker Photo Service. They thought that I would really mess it up.

I am surprised that it's only 84 years old. I thought it was older than my 92 year old mother. I'll have to ask her if she remembers it being built.
